As golf continues to evolve, driven by new generations of players and consumers seeking more authentic and less conventional options, four Puerto Rican entrepreneurs announced the official launch of Malamaña, a new golf apparel brand inspired by the essence, colors, and culture of the Caribbean.

The proposal aims to change how golf fashion is perceived, which has often been conservative, by offering apparel that combines performance, design, and versatility. Malamaña presents a collection designed to accompany the consumer both on and off the golf course, reflecting a more modern and lifestyle-driven approach to the sport.

“The golf industry is constantly evolving, and consumers are looking for brands that reflect who they are and how they live. We saw an opportunity to create an authentic brand that embodies the energy, creativity, and personality of the Caribbean, without sacrificing quality or functionality,” said Francisco Villavicencio, co-founder of Malamaña.

With an initial investment of $60,000, the project is led by entrepreneurs Alejandro Meléndez, Josean Merced, Francisco Villavicencio, and Emilio Ramos, whose combined backgrounds span engineering, architecture, marketing, and business development. Driven by their shared passion for golf and entrepreneurship, the partners identified an opportunity to create a brand that appeals to a new generation of players who see the sport as an extension of their lifestyle.

Josean Merced, the creative leader of the group of entrepreneurs, said “They say that in golf, having a bad habit can be a flaw. For us, it is precisely that irreverent attitude that inspires a new way of looking at the game. We want to challenge the unwritten rules of golf fashion and create versatile pieces that work just as well on the green as they do at a get-together with friends.”

A collection inspired in the Caribbean

Malamaña’s debut collection pays tribute to iconic elements of the Caribbean’s landscapes, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, ransforming each piece into a narrative that reflects the region’s identity and traditions.

The collection features designs inspired by distinctive Caribbean elements, including: La Pichincho, a tribute to the renowned deep-sea fishing area between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, famous for marlin fishing. “La Tarraya,” which pays homage to one of the Caribbean’s most traditional fishing tools. “La Pirúa,” inspired by the Caribbean guava, known for its intense shades of pink and red. “The Drop,” a design influenced by the dramatic underwater wall north of Puerto Rico, where the depths of the Atlantic Ocean begin.

Each piece has been crafted from high-quality materials designed to provide comfort, breathability, and flexibility, while also incorporating a contemporary aesthetic that allows wearers to move effortlessly between athletic activities and social settings.

During this initial phase, the brand will launch an exclusive collection for men, with plans to expand into women’s apparel and new offerings that will continue to expand Malamaña’s creative vision.

A Puerto Rican brand with vision for growth

With a strategy focused on e-commerce, community building, and design innovation, Malamaña seeks to establish itself as a leading name in Puerto Rico’s golf lifestyle market while laying the groundwork for future expansion into key markets across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States.

“We want to show that brands with a powerful identity can be created in Puerto Rico—brands capable of competing in global markets without losing their essence. Malamaña is a celebration of the Caribbean, of our creativity, and of a new way of experiencing sports,” concluded Emilio Ramos, co-founder of Malamaña.
